Tree services in Canberra’s inner south
Deakin, Forrest, Red Hill, Yarralumla and Griffith — big blocks, heritage plantings, and trees that are almost always protected.
The inner south is where Canberra’s best trees live. Large blocks, generous setbacks and a hundred years of deliberate planting have produced a canopy that the rest of the city does not have — and a set of expectations to match.
We already work in this part of town
The National Gallery of Australia and the Australian National University sit at the edge of these suburbs, and we work on both. That means exclusion zones, public foot traffic, heritage plantings and zero tolerance for a dropped limb — a standard that transfers directly to a back garden in Forrest or Red Hill.
Assume your tree is protected
In practice, most mature trees on an inner-south block will exceed at least one of the ACT thresholds, and a number of individual trees in these suburbs are on the ACT Tree Register, which protects them regardless of size.
That is not the obstacle people assume. Plenty of what homeowners actually want — getting the canopy off the roofline, opening light back into a garden, clearing a driveway, taking out deadwood — can be done inside the permitted minor-pruning rules or with a straightforward approval. The trick is knowing which before you commit. The rules, in plain English.
Cedars, oaks, liquidambars and old conifers
The inner south has a genuinely varied exotic canopy — deodar and Himalayan cedars, oaks, liquidambars, birches, big old cypresses and pines from the earliest plantings. Several of those species carry specific structural risks as they age: cedars shed large limbs, old cypresses go hollow at the base while looking perfectly healthy up top, and liquidambars develop tight, included unions that split.
None of that is visible from a lawn chair. It is visible from inside the canopy, which is one reason a proper assessment beats a guess.
Gardens worth protecting
Established inner-south gardens are frequently more valuable than the tree work itself. We lay boards over lawn and beds, keep machinery off root zones and garden beds, plan the drop zone before anything comes off, and hand the site back clean. If there is a plant you would be upset about, point it out before we start — we would rather work around it than apologise for it.
ACT tree rules apply here
Trees in Inner South Canberra fall under the ACT Urban Forest Act 2023. A tree on your block is protected once it reaches 8 m tall, an 8 m canopy spread, or a trunk 1 m around measured 1.4 m up — and every tree on the nature strip is protected regardless of size. Whether a tree is protected is the property owner’s responsibility to confirm. Plain-English guide and a free checker here.

“Our first time using Treetops Tree Services after a recommendation. We’re really happy with the job Ben and the team did with a tree removal and pruning and shaping of two large feature trees. The knowledge and advice provided was extremely helpful and they were efficient and cleaned up the site. Thanks guys, we’ll certainly be using your services in the future and are more than happy to recommend your company to others.”
Booked in and done
We work across the whole ACT every week, so getting to Inner South Canberra is routine rather than a special trip. Quotes generally happen within a few days, and anything unsafe is prioritised the day you call.
Questions from Inner South Canberra
Is every tree in Forrest and Red Hill protected?
Not every one, but assume so until it is checked. Mature trees on these blocks usually pass at least one of the ACT thresholds, and some are individually listed on the ACT Tree Register regardless of size. Measuring takes a minute and saves a great deal of trouble.
Do you work for body corporates and property managers?
Yes, regularly. Ben will come out, look at the trees and give you a fixed price you can take to the committee. More on tree health.
