Tree services in Belconnen

From Aranda to Macgregor — the 1970s eucalypt plantings that have comfortably outgrown the blocks they were put on.

Belconnen went up fast through the late sixties and seventies, and it was planted the way everyone planted then — with quick-growing eucalypts that would give shade in a decade. Fifty years on, those trees are enormous and the blocks have not got any bigger.

Trees in Belconnen

A 25 m eucalypt planted in 1974 on a 700 m² block with a house, a garage, a colorbond fence and a neighbour on every side.

These trees are not necessarily unhealthy — many are in fine condition. The issue is scale. They are now taller than the distance to the house, they drop substantial deadwood, and the wind exposure across the Belconnen ridges is real.

What actually fails here

  • Included bark unions. Where two stems have grown tight together with bark trapped between them, there is no proper wood connection. These split, usually at the worst possible moment, and usually taking half the tree.
  • Summer limb drop. A eucalypt shedding a large limb on a hot, still afternoon with no wind at all. It is a real phenomenon and it is why deadwood over a driveway matters.
  • Old radiata pines. Windbreak plantings and garden specimens that are now well past their safe life, shallow-rooted, and top-heavy after wet winters.

Reduction beats removal more often than people expect

Homeowners frequently ring wanting a big eucalypt gone, and after we have looked at it the honest recommendation is a crown reduction and a deadwood clean-out. That takes the weight off the structure and the risk off the driveway, keeps the shade and the value, costs a fraction of a removal, and does not require an application.

Sometimes removal is genuinely the answer. We will tell you which it is. More on pruning.

Access is usually the good news

Compared with the inner north, Belconnen blocks are generous. Wide streets, driveways, and frequently rear or side access wide enough to get a truck and chipper close. That keeps costs down — a big tree with good access can be substantially cheaper than a mid-sized tree in a courtyard.

ACT tree rules apply here

Trees in Belconnen fall under the ACT Urban Forest Act 2023. A tree on your block is protected once it reaches 8 m tall, an 8 m canopy spread, or a trunk 1 m around measured 1.4 m up — and every tree on the nature strip is protected regardless of size. Whether a tree is protected is the property owner’s responsibility to confirm. Plain-English guide and a free checker here.

What we see most in Belconnen

Oversized 70s eucalypts

Taller than the distance to the house. Usually healthy — simply too big for the block.

Included bark unions

Tight forks with no real wood connection. The classic Belconnen failure.

Good truck access

Wider blocks and streets mean lower costs than the equivalent inner-north job.

★★★★★

“Ben came and gave a very good quote for removing an unwanted cypress from my front yard. Once I’d confirmed, he organised to do the work promptly. The job was very neat, stump cut low to the ground, and a super clean up job. My only regret was not being home to watch as I would have loved to nerd out over the process. Would absolutely use again. Thank you!”

We work across the whole ACT every week, so getting to Belconnen is routine rather than a special trip. Quotes generally happen within a few days, and anything unsafe is prioritised the day you call.

Questions from Belconnen

My gum is huge. Does it have to come out?

Often not. A crown reduction plus deadwooding takes the load off the structure and the risk off whatever is underneath, for a fraction of the removal price and with no application needed for minor work. We only recommend removal when the structure is genuinely compromised.

How do I know if my tree has an included bark union?

Look at the main fork. If the two stems meet in a tight V with a seam of bark running down into the join — rather than a rounded U with a raised ridge — that is included bark. It is a genuine structural defect worth getting looked at, particularly on a tree over the house.

Is my Belconnen tree protected?

Almost certainly, if it is one of the big 70s eucalypts — those clear the 8 m height threshold easily. Check it with our free tool, which takes about thirty seconds.
