Tree removal in Canberra
Dangerous, dying or simply in the wrong place — taken down in a controlled way, with everything cleaned up and carted off the same day.
Removal is the last option, not the first. But when a tree has to go, how it comes down matters enormously — especially on a Canberra block where the fence, the shed and the neighbour’s roof are all within reach.
Felling versus sectional dismantling
If there is genuinely clear ground to drop into, a straight fell is quick and safe. Most Canberra back yards do not have that luxury. In those cases we climb the tree and take it apart from the top down — a technique called sectional dismantling.
Each piece is cut, roped, and lowered under control through a rigging system rather than dropped. It is slower and it costs more in labour, and it is the difference between an uneventful morning and a limb through your pergola.
The trees we take out most often in Canberra
After 27 years on Canberra trees, the pattern is very consistent:
- Radiata pines from old windbreaks and 60s plantings — shallow-rooted, top-heavy, and prone to whole-tree failure in a wet winter followed by a westerly.
- Eucalypts planted in the 70s and 80s now well past the size the block was designed for, often with included bark unions splitting at the main fork.
- Elms weakened by decades of elm leaf beetle pressure, shedding limbs over driveways and footpaths.
- Poplars and willows near drains and paving, where the roots have become the more expensive problem.
- Storm-damaged trees where a major limb has already gone and the remaining structure is now badly unbalanced.
Check whether the tree is protected first
Under the ACT Urban Forest Act 2023, a tree on leased land is protected once it reaches 8 m in height, an 8 m canopy spread, or a trunk circumference of 1 m measured 1.4 m above the ground. Trees listed on the ACT Tree Register are protected whatever their size.
If the tree is protected, approval has to be in place before it comes out, and arranging that sits with the property owner. The ACT Government explains the process on its Tree protection laws page.
Our plain-English guide to the ACT rules is here, with a checker that tests your tree against the size thresholds in about thirty seconds.
What about the stump?
Standard removals leave the stump cut as low as we safely can to ground level. If you want it gone entirely — because you are re-turfing, paving or replanting in the same spot — tell us at quote time so grinding is priced in from the start rather than added later.
What it costs
Height matters less than people expect. Access and what sits underneath the tree move the price far more. Mid-sized removals run into the low thousands and large complex jobs above that. Here is how tree removal pricing actually works, then Ben gives you a fixed number on site, free.

What’s included
What you get when Treetops does the job
- Controlled dismantling, not dropping. Rigging and lowering systems so nothing lands where it shouldn’t.
- Straight advice on the rules. Ben will tell you if he thinks the tree needs approval before anything starts.
- Everything carted away. Timber and green waste go in the truck. Site raked and blown down.
- Stump cut low as standard. Full grinding available — just ask at quote time so it is in the price.
- Fixed price, quoted in person. Ben looks at the actual tree. The quoted number is the invoiced number.
- Fully insured. Certificate of currency sent on request before work starts.
“Ben came and gave a very good quote for removing an unwanted cypress from my front yard. Once I’d confirmed, he organised to do the work promptly. The job was very neat, stump cut low to the ground, and a super clean up job. My only regret was not being home to watch as I would have loved to nerd out over the process. Would absolutely use again. Thank you!”
Common questions
How much does tree removal cost in Canberra?
Typical Canberra ranges run roughly $275–$880 for a small tree under 5 m, $880–$2,750 for a 5–10 m tree, and $2,750 upwards for large removals, with very large or complex jobs going higher again. Those are market guide figures, not our price list. What drives the price is size, access, and what is underneath the tree. Ben quotes it fixed and free on site. Full cost breakdown here.
Do I need approval to remove a tree in Canberra?
If it is 8 m or more tall, has a canopy 8 m or wider, or a trunk 1 m or more around at 1.4 m height, then yes. Dead native trees are protected at a 1.88 m trunk circumference. Arranging that approval is the property owner’s responsibility. Full rules and a checker here.
How long does a removal take?
A straightforward small tree is often an hour or two. A large eucalypt over a house, dismantled in sections with rigging, can be a full day or more with a crew. Ben will tell you the expected time when he quotes so you can plan access and parking.
